Passione: A Musical Adventure Film & Discussion
The American actor John Tuturro offers a summary of the musical culture of Naples, most of it sung. It’s beautiful, gritty Naples, and the variety is ever so rich, with styles from operatic and classical to Modern Pop. Caruso was born there. The range comes from Naples residents over the centuries, from Ancient Greeks and other “visitors” to this city, Middle Eastern tunes, Euro-pop dance tracks, etc. American blues has been crucial, much of it coming from black GIs who occupied the city at the end of World War II. One listens, enjoys, and often has a hard time sitting still. No pastels here. It is passionate singing to an encyclopedia of different rhythms.
